The MCB Heidelberg Wind Ensemble is excited to announce its program of concerts for 2024.
All concerts are at: St Georges Anglican Church, Warncliffe Road, East Ivanhoe.
Concert One: (Sunday, 2 June - 5:00pm) features music composed over a period of 200-years beginning with Beethoven’s “Leonore” Overture No. 3 Op.72, of 1806, considered by many audiences as the greatest of the four overtures written for his opera – Fidelio, in an arrangement by British bandmaster Dan Godfrey.
The program looks to the stars and the heavens in works by Dello Joio: “Concertante”; Biebl’s “Ave Maria”; Dinh’s “Spirit and Opportunity” – a celebration of the Mars exploration rovers; Tull’s “The Final Covenant” – the promises made by God to Mankind; Strens’ Danse Funambulesque (1929) - inspired by the death-defying feats of a tightrope walker at the circus, and Cichy’s “Galilean Moons” – reflecting on the disparate qualities of the four Galilean moons of Jupiter.
Concert Two: (Saturday, 31 August - 3:30pm) opens with a dramatic piece by Shostakovich, the Russian master composer and his Symphonic Poem – October, a representation of the spirit of the Revolution as it existed in the minds of the Russian people; followed by Australian composer Taran Carter’s - “Moondani: Black” – in memory of the victims of the 2009 Victorian Black Saturday fires. We are excited to announce the collaboration with acclaimed flautist Lisa-Maree Amos, Principal Flute of Orchestra Victoria performing Henk Badings: “Concerto for Flute and Wind Orchestra”, Green’s “Music for Shakespeare”, Master American composer Vittorio Giannini’s “Symphony No. 3” in Bb and concluding with Gustav Holst’s “A Moorside Suite” H. 173, (1928) arr. by Denis Wright (1937).
Concert ThreeSaturday (23 November - 7:30pm.) Be delighted in Concert Three by a program including the music of Percy Grainger, Steve Bryant, Malcolm Arnold, Julie Giroux, Gordon Jacob and David Keeffe.
Our guest conductor, Dr. Joanne Heaton, will take you on a journey with an exciting program of music by Australian, American, and English composers.
The program features a new work by the Australian composer – David Keeffe: “a dance for where the ground is thickly shaded” for symphonic band.
The English composers are represented with two wonderful works: English Dances for Band by Malcolm Arnold and the thrilling Concerto for Timpani and Band by Gordon Jacob featuring as timpani soloist - our own John Wise. The sound of the English composers from the early C20th is truly magical.
The two American composers - Steve Bryant & Julie Giroux, have two very personal works in the program. Giroux’s work was written in memory of Heather Cramer Reu for her “one life beautiful” that brought so much love and joy to her family’s lives.
Bryant’s Impercynations is a work inspired by the compositions of Percy Grainger.
Tickets attractively priced at $30/$20/$10 Adults/concession/U16. Go to the Heidelberg Orchestras Inc., website www.heidelbergsymphony.com.au/concerts
