ABOUT THE BAND
Merri-bek City Band (MCB) is a dynamic community music organisation based in Brunswick, Melbourne. The Band - and its antecedents in Brunswick and Coburg - has been pumping out brassy tunes since 1882. In recent times Merri-bek City Band has been reinvented, evolving beyond traditional brass band music to encompass more diverse musical styles. The band is based at the Cross Street Music Hall at 16 - 22 Cross Street, Brunswick (Melbourne, Australia). Merri-bek City Band is the umbrella organisation for a number of member and associate ensembles including its own core groups, the MCB Phoenix Project and the MCB Krysalis. MCB is run entirely by volunteers and administered by a committee elected from its membership. In any given week, rehearsals and performances at Cross Street will encompass everything from amateur ensembles to some of Australia’s most acclaimed jazz professionals. |

Ghost sign Brunswick band - later Moreland City Band - occupied clubrooms in Phoenix Street, behind the Brunswick Baths, for over 70 years, through until 2011. The band room at Phoenix Street no longer exists but, pleasingly, this rusting sign on the corner of Sydney Road and Phoenix Street continues to testify! |
Moustaches compulsory!
This charming portrait of Brunswick Town Bandsmen (plus young mascot) surfaced recently in a collection compiled by Brunswick Historical Society, originally compiled for a slide-show presentation in 1939. |
